Weekend Reading 9.26.21
I had a lovely birthday weekend! My best girlfriends picked me up on Friday and took me wine tasting then out to dinner, and the rest of the weekend I’ve been relaxing and taking it slow. Practicing the art of slow living leads to such good things. Food tastes better, plants and flowers are more lovely, time with friends and family is savored. It feels rebellious to slow down in our fast paced world and appreciate things as they are in the moment, but should it? If slowing down makes life more meaningful then I’m starting to believe the ones caught up in a fast pace or the ones wanting more more more might be doing it wrong. :) Feel like renting a cottage in the English countryside? Take your pick. An oh so lovely, light and bright courtyard transformation. This pool house is a well done inside to out transition. Inspiration for decorating your porches and patios for autumn. Spray paint for the (big) win! Tips on how to plan and pack for a pandemic trip to Europe. Why some older couples have great relationships. How to remember what you read. Being brave enough to live life creatively. 40 beautiful moments to remember to savor. Today I toured some model homes near me and I’ll share the design takeaways in tomorrow’s Instagram stories. :) Via HVAC http://www.rssmix.com/ via Blogger http://jessicabaker1.blogspot.com/2021/09/weekend-reading-92621_27.html September 27, 2021 at 06:25AM

Bathroom Design: Fixed Shower Panels
Yesterday I shared on my Instagram stories some progress shots on our little two bedroom flip house and created the final to-do checklist before we can list it for sale. For both bathroom remodels, I chose single pane glass shower panels. It’s a contemporary look, but one I prefer in small to mid size bathrooms with walk in showers. These tempered glass panels are available in a few different styles: framed, frameless, screen, and etched. Installation requires U brackets secured to the wall and shower floor with added silicone on both sides of the glass to stabilize the pane. For my shower remodels I bought two of these frameless panels in satin brass, they were a lot less expensive than a local bid I got for shower doors. I’m so pleased with how light they feel compared to the alternative of framed sliding or a hinged shower door. (And less glass to clean!) The same panels are also available here with multiple bracket finishes available. This “barely there” frameless style works for any walk in shower where there is additional space for entry and exit beyond the panel. Below are a few examples where other designers have installed a similar fixed shower panel. Also find budget friendly sources for a similar style if you’re planning a shower remodel in the future. :) Budget Friendly Shower Glass Panels:

I Want to Smell Like a Marshmallow
But not like marshmallows. You know? More like the “ooh, you smell so good, what are you wearing” kind of way. Let’s look at some gourmand fragrances that give off that vibe. Fall is here, let’s celebrate! Smell like a marshmallow! (Fun fact, I do not like eating marshmallows. But all of these, save one, have something more to them and that lets me forgive the fact that they remind me of the worst of confections.) Let’s just smell delicious. Eau Duelle, DiptyqueTo be fair, I don’t get marshmallow from this, but a lot of people do. What I do get is vanilla, and that is what gets us there. But there’s also a greenness and some spice, making this my favorite of the bunch. MARSHMALLOW LEVEL: 1/5 By the Fireplace, Maison Margella ReplicaWere you making s’mores? Because I get campfire vibes more than fireplace vibes. Either way, this one is a lot at first, coming on strong, but it fades into a gentle warmth that reminds me of the softer Whispers in the Library. MARSHMALLOW LEVEL: 2/5 Marshmallow, DemeterLeave it to Demeter to make something that smells exactly as you would expect. Sometimes you can judge a book by its cover, or in this case a scent by its name. MARSHMALLOW LEVEL: 5/5 Baccarat Rouge 540, Maison Francis KurkdjianThis is beautiful. This is popular. People absolutely love it! I was talking about it on Instagram and I said it smells like burnt sugar, so there you go. It’s just not what I prefer, but it could very well be the one for you. Or try Ariana Grande’s Cloud for 1/6 the price. Very similar. MARSHMALLOW LEVEL: 3/5 Yes I Do, Etat Libre D’OrangeWear this to a spring wedding, bride or guest. (Wait, now that I type that, am I being led because of the name? Because the copy on the site is very Lolita, not bridal.) Soft, lily of the valley with an underlying sweetness. MARSHMALLOW LEVEL: 1/5 This was a very fun post to make. Honorable mention to Bath & Body Works’ Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte which is far too sweet for me, but something I would have loved when I was younger. p.s. If you’re going to smell like a marshmallow, might as well be sitting in something equally fluffy. I suggest the Bacio Cream Boucle Lounge Chair from CB2, or perhaps Jonathan Adler’s Ether Cloud Settee. marshmallow icon: marshmallow by Milky – Digital innovation from the Noun Project © 2021, published by Making it Lovely as I Want to Smell Like a Marshmallow | No comments | This post may contains affiliate links; I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking on my links. Weekend Reading 9.19.21
Hello friends, how is your September so far? I’m a bit sad having had to postpone my trip to Spain but I’ve been enjoying our California fall weather so no complaints! My birthday is next week and a group of my girlfriends are planning a special outing and I’m not allowed to know the details. :) Today I’m prepping the walls to install the wallpaper in the bathroom at our flip property, it’s so close to being done. I’ll be featuring that transformed space very soon! Cozy textiles and the most beautiful paint colors fill this country cottage. (Before pictures here). Tour the 2021 Real Simple home (loving that green painted home office). Find calm coastal vibes in this family home on Seabrook Island. Cool DIY project: how to make a concrete lookalike coffee table top. Pretty interior plant styling ideas. 11 cities in danger from rising sea levels. The creation behind the wrapped Arc de Triomphe in Paris. 22 grocery store marinara sauces ranked. Vacation spot of the week: Es Bec D’Aguila in Menorca, Spain. Reexamining the impact of our phones and who we follow. Cane Accent Chairs
I was feeling the need for change in the living room so I bought myself some new accent chairs. I’d been searching for a few months having grown tired of my teal upholstered versions. I couldn’t find anything I really liked in an affordable price range until these caned armchairs popped up in my search, so I bought them for their casual style, versatility, and price.
They won’t live in the living room forever. I’ll probably move them to a bedroom in the future, but for now I like how light and natural they feel in this space. caned armchairs / textured pillows Cane and rattan have been trending for a few years, but cane furniture has been around for centuries! Because of the resurgence in popularity, we have more stylish choices than ever. The style is lovely as a dining chair, office chair, or accent chair!

Weekend Reading 9.12.21
Yesterday was a somber one, I remember September 11, 2001 so clearly. My teenagers asked me what it was like so I told them my story. I was on east coast time, vacationing with Matt in Puerto Rico when I went to the hotel gym to work out in the morning. In the distance on the television I saw a burning building and thought it was the latest Hollywood action movie. It never occurred to me that it was real. Then I watched a second plane hit the World Trade Center. Then I watched the twin towers fall in real time. Those who lived it remember planes were grounded for days. We were stuck on the island, glued to the television. We were unable to get a return flight for five days and finally flew through JFK on our way back to San Francisco. I’ll never forget the mood at JFK, everyone was cooperative but collectively so very sad. Two months later we were in New York City visiting Ground Zero where the embers were still burning. I’ll never forget the somber feeling in the city yet also the solidarity among the people. I visited the memorial plaza ten years later and it was heartbreaking to stand in that place. It always will be. Favorite links found this week: A very cool mottled tile backsplash in this redesigned condo. Old world meets new plus so many arches in this Spanish style home. I’m on board with this look: stained wood paneling. Martha’s visual guide to all the pumpkin varieties. 20 apple recipes for fall cooking. I’ve got a list of pandemic purchases, good and bad. What were yours? Plan your trip with the 2021 USA Fall Foliage Map (by date). Four ways to prioritize rest. Leaf Embellished Pumpkins
I was at Trader Joe’s yesterday and they had just brought out their gourds and cinderella pumpkins. They are always a good price there so I brought a few home and embellished them with preserved leaves and a few fresh eucalyptus stems.
I purchased these skeleton rubber plant leaves a few weeks ago on Amazon, they are so delicate and great for so many fall crafts. green leaves / natural color / brown leaves I like these skeleton leaves so much I started creating a simple wreath too, attaching the leaves with hot glue to a gold wire circle. These transparent leaves are great for so many fall projects: garlands, wreaths, bookmarks, art projects, even headbands.
This pumpkin project is simple, quick, and easy. Gather whatever gourds or pumpkins you like, real or fake, and dried botanicals or long lasting fresh stems like eucalyptus.
I used the skeleton leaves to decorate a few of the pumpkins, using Mod Podge to attach them. I used both fake and real pumpkins for this project, the leaves look fab with either!
I used a few extra dried ferns from last week’s roundup of preserved botanicals for fall to cover the top of a white cinderella pumpkin. For these flat ferns, I used spray adhesive to attach them to the pumpkin.
I used hot glue to attach the eucalyptus stems to this green gourd.
I used three different adhesives during this project: Mod Podge for thin skeleton leaves, spray adhesive for flat leaves, and hot glue for stems.
These make great little seasonal objects for shelves or indoor vignettes.
Or use them in outdoor displays too!
So easy and so pretty! Via HVAC http://www.rssmix.com/via Blogger http://jessicabaker1.blogspot.com/2021/09/leaf-embellished-pumpkins_10.html September 10, 2021 at 06:25AM |
